Half way between Nelson and Castlegar on Highway 3A sits Kalesnikoff Lumber Co. Ltd., an operation that’s roots are as deep in the region as those of many trees in the adjacent lush forests. Founded in 1939, the Kalesnikoff bothers worked diligently to establish their business, finally settling in Thrums where the company stands today. Ken Kalesnikoff is the third generation to lead Kalesnikoff Lumber Company, and the fourth generation of the family is now engaged in senior leadership positions in the company. Kalesnikoff Lumber Company has become a world leader in forest stewardship and quality wood production. Their international reputation for a balanced approach to environmental, social and economic values inspires customers and forges lasting relationships.

In a region rich in forest resources and scenic beauty, Kalesnikoff Lumber Company practices sustainable forestry with careful planning for environmental values, selective harvesting, and includes a vigorous reforestation and stand-tending program. This dedication to forest health ensures the long-term well-being of both their community and industry, principles the business was founded upon. They harvest wood in the Kootenay Forest Region with operations reaching approximately 150 km from Thrums, to Nakusp, Creston, the USA border, and Grand Forks. The main species they harvest and mill are Douglas Fir, Western Larch, Englemann Spruce, Lodgepole Pine, and Idaho White Pine. The tight fine-grained fibre harvested here in the West Kootenay region of BC produces a superior product that is very much sought after.
